Many thanks to the volunteers who support the Heather Glen community. These musicians, beauticians, art instructors and pet therapy volunteers enrich the lives of many residents.

Amy performing a makeover

Amy Landers is a volunteer who offers makeup and eyebrow services. She is a licensed esthetician and owner of East Side Lash Studio in Asheville. These makeovers, lovingly referred to as “Try New Looks with Amy,” take place in the activity room at Heather Glen, where the staff sets the tone by showing Marilyn Monroe movies and decorating in old-Hollywood style.

“Some of these ladies haven’t been treated to a makeover in a long time. It’s refreshing and exciting to see their mood improve afterward,” said Amy.

Amy uses foundation, concealer, blush, eye shadow, lipstick, brow tint and other products to complete these makeovers. Amy often attracts resident spectators to watch her work her magic.

“I’ve gotten to know the residents quite well over the last year, or so that I’ve been volunteering,” said Amy. “I get to hear about their kids and what’s going on with them. I really enjoy the time I spend here.”

Amy knows the importance of looking and feeling good in one’s skin, which is another reason she enjoys offering her services — she knows they matter.

"This is the perfect opportunity for me to help others. Volunteering on this level is new to me, and it is very fulfilling,” said Amy.

We salute Amy, who helps cultivate a spirit of volunteerism at Heather Glen. Amy's efforts — and those of our many other volunteers — help our community thrive.

Commemorating National Volunteer Week, April 19–25, Community Life Director Kari Schrader created gift boxes for each of our community's volunteers to honor their dedication to our Heather Glen residents.
